Campus Life is a bi-weekly blog about daily events happening around Pitt’s campus.

The weather in Pittsburgh is very indecisive, going up to around 70 degrees this past weekend. However, this weekend the average temperature is around 40 degrees and it will only get colder. The winter weather in Pittsburgh, especially in December, January and February, is very brutal, making it difficult to explore this beautiful city. Hope this is a good guide for fun things to do indoors, alone or with your friends, without having to go outside.

My roommate and I love decorating our apartment this time of year, especially with the holidays approaching. Even if you don’t celebrate certain holidays during this time, you can still put up some fun fall decorations to spice up your dorm room or apartment. We love to put on some fun music or a Christmas movie and hang lights around our living room and put our mini Christmas tree on our coffee table. We also like to light candles in our apartment, so we bring festive ones, but if you live in a dorm, you can buy a scented air freshener that will give you the same cozy feeling.

If you love food but don’t want to walk in the cold up Forbes Avenue or hop on a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus, you can always Doordash a meal from your favorite restaurant. I love Nicky’s Thai Kitchen on Penn Avenue, but taking an Uber or bus there can be time-consuming and inconvenient when it’s cold, so I tend to take it back to my apartment. I like a good hot meal when it’s cool, especially when I don’t have to go out to have it.

Another fun thing to do is recreate your favorite meal at home, alone or with a few friends. Cooking with friends is always a great way to spend time together, especially if everyone is up for trying new foods. You can Snap a few errands wherever you live so you don’t have to go out, which can be really handy even on a normal day when you don’t want to take public transport. Everyone can cook different cuisines or meals, and you can have a great potluck with different types of food. My friends and I make it frequently, even when it’s not cold, because we like to cook different meals and try new things together. If you don’t want to cook an entire meal, you can always whip up a treat and enjoy that too. There are many festive desserts to try and you can find many different recipes on the internet. My favorite holiday desserts are white chocolate cranberry cookies and pecan pie.

If you’re looking to do an activity with friends this time of year, I think a great way to catch up and spend some quality time together is to make gingerbread houses. You can even make it a bit competitive and split into teams and have a contest to see who did the best. Put some music in the background and it’s a great activity to do indoors.

One activity to do indoors that won’t cost you any extra money – because being a student can be tough sometimes – is just to stay indoors and watch your favorite show. My current favorites are “Love is Blind” and “Peaky Blinders” on Netflix, and “Friends” on HBO Max. If you haven’t had a chance to watch them yet, I highly recommend them! A few of my favorite movies recently are ‘Endless Love’, ‘The Good Nurse’ and the classic ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’, all of which are on Netflix. Obviously, if you’re in a more festive mood approach holidays, you can also put your favorite Christmas movie.

All of these activities are a great way to hang out with your friends before everyone else goes on vacation. Even if you’re doing these things on your own, I think it’s a great way to spend some alone time and relax, especially after the mid runs and finals.
