BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – More and more people are turning to planting a garden to save money on food costs this summer.

Mark Thompson is the co-owner of Shoppe in Birmingham. He said the average cost of a plant is between $2 and $4 and can feed a family for a few months.

Beginner gardeners need to remember to fertilize, water, prune and pick.

“You don’t want to let your vegetables sit too long, you want to check on them at least every few days.”

Thompson said Alabama has a long growing season, but the best time to plant vegetables is in the spring and fall.

“In the early fall there will be another round of tomatoes, squash and what we consider our traditional locally grown summer vegetables,” Thompson said.

If you can’t wait to get your garden started, herbs are a great place to start.

Thompson said it’s important to do your research and stay on top of your plants.

“It’s not magic, like putting it in the ground and all of a sudden having this great plant. You have to really learn, cultivate and really grow,” Thompson said.
