The day-to-day expectations of college can be stressful themselves, and that pressure only intensifies when it comes time to schedule classes for the upcoming semester. What many students don’t know is that there are many courses offered by Ohio University that explore topics beyond the basics of a major. Whether you want to learn more about a specific subject or discover a new hobby, there are endless interesting courses to choose from.
The best part is: the courses listed do not require any prerequisites; any student OU interested can enroll in one of them. Make use of space in your schedule or take advantage of electives by enrolling in one of these great courses coming up this fall:
PBIO 1000 (Plants in the Global Environment)
For those who need science credit and are not science majors, this course is perfect for you. As noted on the course offerings page, PBIO 1000 focuses on how to protect plant resources and discusses climate change. It is said to be extremely engaging and enlightening on the themes of how to be more climate friendly and live a more sustainable lifestyle.
MUS 1240 (History of Rock Music I)
If you are an avid rock and roll listener or just want to learn more about the history of rock music, put MUS 1240 in your course cart. Not only will you learn about the early and current stages of this legendary music genre, but you’ll also discuss its impact on youth culture and society as a whole.
Jimmy Riley, a young engineering technology and management student who took MUS 1240, said it was “a moderately easy course where we learned about influential artists and bands and the impact they have had on rock music”. Another student, Molly McKelvey, a second-year psychology student, said: “It was interesting to learn about the different genres of music, the history behind it and the time period in which it occurred. ” Overall, this class is a fun change of content from other foundation courses and is perfect for rock and roll fans.
DAY 2230 (Podcasting survey)
Podcasting has become extremely popular in recent years. It’s a creative outlet for many that lets them talk about any topic they want and share their experiences, stories, and more with their audience. This podcasting survey course dives deep into the history of the podcasting industry with a focus on audio journalism. You will also learn about the importance of journalistic podcasts and how to reach a large and appropriate audience.
This course is scheduled to meet twice a week, once in person and once online. The teacher teaching DAY 2230 this fall, Elizabeth Hendrickson, is hailed as a great instructor who is both funny and engaging. This course is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about podcasting and how to start a successful audio journal.
MKT 2020 (Marketing Principles)
For non-commercial majors who want to learn more about the marketing environment, add MKT 2020 to your fall schedule. It gives a broad understanding of marketing practices and principles, as well as a focus on realistic problems for marketing managers. This course can help anyone learn more about the marketing industry and better understand global consumer markets.
Also, many students in the past have recommended taking this course with Professor Tom Marchese. Many said he was entertaining and lectured and had excellent teaching skills. Marchese’s industry experience can help many students incorporate this knowledge into their future careers, regardless of field.
RFM 1100 (Fashion and Culture)
This course is perfect for those who enjoy shopping and are interested in fashion but are not in a fashion-focused major. It uses the interesting approach of focusing on the factors that influence consumer adoption of fashion. In other words, why trends come and go as they please. You will also have the opportunity to discover the fashion trends of the first decades, which are coming back in recent years.
ART 1130 (Selfies, messages and faded paper: our family album)
You may have never heard of this course or anything like it. However, ART 1530 might be a secret gem in the course catalog. Although the name of the course is a bit long and slightly confusing, it inspires most students to dig deeper into what it entails.
ART 1130 encourages students to explore the power of photography as a tool to document our existence. As stated in the course offerings page under the description, “This course focuses on the power of photography to share personal.” He also says that students are required to engage in reflective writing and creative sharing. Although this course may be new or simply unpopular, it has the potential to be very rewarding. Hurry, because there are only 5 places in the class.
If you want to get out of the classroom, try one of the recreational classes offered by OU. There are several pages of these courses that will be offered in the fall and some are also half-semester courses. REC 1000 (Fundamentals of Backpacking) teaches students how to safely enjoy overnight backpacking trips. There’s even a two-day trip to the course.
Another attractive course is REC 1080 (Basics of Rock Climbing). You will learn everything there is to know about the sport of rock climbing and even have the opportunity to go on a weekend trip to put your knowledge to the test. Finally, you can get your scuba diving certificate through REC 1220 (Scuba Diver). Students are trained in this class for open water check dives.
Physical Activity and Wellness, or PAW, classes offered by OU offer a variety of ways to enhance physical recreation and work on a healthier lifestyle. If you wanted to improve your lifting skills and don’t know where to start, sign up for PAW 1003, Bodybuilding). There’s even a yoga class, PAW 1005, that teaches basic yoga poses and fits some relaxation time into your schedule.
If you love golf but never have the time, take PAW 1202, Fundamentals of Golf. Or, if you want to take up a new hobby, try the archery course, PAW 1208. Finally, get a group of friends together and take on PAW 1104, Ultimate Frisbee. While all of these courses count as credits, they won’t feel like you’re actually in class.
